Donald Trump and Newt Gingrich Talk Golf

Former speaker Newt Gingrich is a member of Donald Trump’s exclusive golf club. Gingrich took up golfing in 1999 after leaving the House of Representatives.

When real estate mogul Donald Trump welcomes former speaker Newt Gingrich to Trump Tower today, he will not only be welcoming another presidential candidate, but also a member of his exclusive golf club in Northern Virginia.

“I have a lot of respect for Newt,” Trump said. “Newt’s a member, so I love my members. I always love my members.”

Gingrich, who recently topped TheDes Moines Register poll of potential caucusgoers with 25% of the vote and has campaigned as a person with insider knowledge and an outsider’s perspective, took up the sport after leaving the House of Representatives in 1999, according to the Gingrich Productions website.

His wife, Callista, has been playing since age 9.

“Today, he loves the challenge of hitting a long drive and sinking a short putt,” the website says. “He’s confident that with practice, he will someday learn the game.”

Golf Boosts Kent Community

In Kent, £21.2 million from the 2011 British Open Golf Championship helped boost the local economy. The tourist board has been working on promoting the county as a golf haven over the course of a two-year campaign.

THE 2011 British Open Golf Championship boosted the east Kent economy by £21. 2 million.

The figure has been revealed by the Royal and Ancient golf club in Sandwich which hosted the international sporting event in July.

Club chief executive Peter Dawson commissioned Sheffield Hallam University to crunch the numbers.

The championship delivered a £77 million injection to the county as a whole and £52.6 million of that came from marketing Kent as a golfing haven.

Tourism champions Visit Kent have been working on a two-year campaign to promote the county as a golfing destination and says the success of The Open has had a positive impact and created a new “golf coast.”

A spokesman said: “The Open was a great opportunity for us to highlight to all the visitors to St George’s not only the natural beauty of our countryside and high quality golf courses but all the world-class attractions in the area.”
